The Modal Shop Celebrates Its 20th Year of Serving the Sound and Vibration Community

In 1990, Mike Lally, president of The Modal Shop in Cincinnati, OH, could never have imagined what the next 20 years would bring.  A sister company of PCB Piezotronics, Inc. in Buffalo, NY, The Modal Shop was founded as a spin-off from the University of Cincinnati’s Structural Dynamics Research Laboratory.  Over the years, in all corners of the world, The Modal Shop has participated in high profile test jobs, university and industry seminars, and one-on-one customer visits that have helped PCB Group customers simplify and improve their products and processes.

As a start up company with 4 team members and a handful of original rental items, The Modal Shop quickly grew to be recognized globally as an “innovative, can-do” company whose exceptional growth is a tribute to its outstanding team members, sales force, vendors, partners/suppliers, and loyal customer base throughout its 20 years.

At the heart of The Modal Shop’s success are the four core values of Total Customer Satisfaction, Innovation, Accountability, and Community Service.  These values form the foundation of the company and are the responsibility of all team members.  This value based approach has shaped the company into a vibrant organization that serves both its customers and team members alike.

► The primary core value of Total Customer Satisfaction backs all products and rental services with the guarantee that if, at any time, for any reason, a customer is not completely satisfied with any Modal Shop product, The Modal Shop will repair, replace, or exchange it at no charge.  This has been the longstanding cornerstone of PCB Piezotronics and the entire PCB Group of companies.

► Two indicators of The Modal Shop’s commitment to Innovation are the new products always in development and the Green Initiative program.  This initiative has led to the development of the revolutionary, energy efficient SmartAmpTM (Model 2100E21) for electrodynamic excitation. This lightweight, cool running, silent operation amp includes a new generation of intelligent capabilities.  In the spirit of the original ICP® concept, another introduction, the portable SmartShakerTM with Integrated Power Amplifier (Models K2004E01 and K2007E01) is small in size and mighty in output with the amp “inside” the shaker package.  Featuring 92% ultra-efficient operation for low power consumption, its compact size, portability, and The Modal Shop’s ergonomic EasyTurnTM handles make this innovation a favorite with customers.

► Accountability is the backbone of The Modal Shop’s reputation for outstanding customer service and products within the sound and vibration community.  This accountability is shown through rapid response in delivering talented technical support, as well as everyday business functions like quotes, emails and returned calls.  In an age of automation, The Modal Shop remains committed to providing a friendly live person to answer your questions.

► The Modal Shop also lives the core value of Community Service.  This runs the gamut from participation in the technical community through conference papers, professional society memberships, hiring cooperative students from local universities, and high school outreach of technical learning to the local and global communities.  In the local community the annual sponsorship of a family in need during the holidays fills the company van each Christmas with toys, food, and other much needed items. There is a loyal group of blood donors who give the gift of life every 8 – 10 weeks, and team members (along with their significant others) test their engineering skills by participating in Habitat for Humanity.  To the global community, 2010 has brought the opportunity to provide international hunger and disaster relief by, once again, filling The Modal Shop’s van with food, medical supplies, and clothing for shipment to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.  Responsibility to the global environment means there is a commitment to recycling the company’s used plastic, metal, batteries, and paper, and to craft products that use less energy while producing more output.  The Modal Shop’s company culture is one of acceptance and inclusion and a general kindness toward fellow humans.

With thanks to its customers, vendors, team members both past and present, and sister company, PCB, The Modal Shop looks forward to the next 20 years of serving the sound and vibration community by continuing to be the one-stop sound and vibration shop for all dynamic measurement needs.
