Resonant Inspection Drop Test Fixture
The Drop Test Fixture, Model NDT-DTF Resonant Inspection System, allows automated sorting and quality testing of small metal injection molded (MIM), powder injection molded (PIM) and other small parts by using the Resonant Acoustic Method (NDT-RAM).
The principle of NDT-RAM is simple. Every part has a unique resonant signature or pattern that reflects its composition. Any deviation from the expected signature or pattern indicates the presence of a structural flaw or variation. An example is a cracked bell that no longer has a clear ring and cannot hold its tone.

The NDT-DTF automates easily with typical small part automation components like bowl feeders or vibratory tables and is instrumented with a laboratory grade force sensor, microphone and digital signal analyzer while still being rugged enough for the manufacturing environment. This easy-to-use NDT system can detect imperfections or flaws such as cracks, missing features, and mixed parts. It can also detect if processes have been missed, such as a machining or heat treating operation.
With typical throughput speeds of three seconds per part, the NDT-DTF provides a means for objective sorting that requires no human interpretation. A simple pass/fail result is returned by the system and parts are automatically sorted via a controlled servo motor.

All of the NDT-RAM systems are ideal for 100% inspection requirements of manufacturers or users of powder metal, metal injection molded (MIM), castings (including ductile iron), forgings, stampings or welding. NDT-RAM provides screening for cracks, chips, holes, porosity, out-of-tolerance dimensions, variations in hardness, residual stress, bonding failures and heat-treating processes. Manufacturers that have significant inspection costs (either material or labor costs), produce or use safety-critical parts, have substantial scrap costs due to false rejects or simply want to improve their part quality can benefit from NDT-RAM technology.
