Electro-dynamic Exciter Family Promotion Program for Universities and Educational Facilities

The Modal Shop, A PCB Group Company, announces a new promotional program for universities and educational facilities to acquire any of their complete electro-dynamic exciter family of products.  Extended discounts are now available to support the experimental research and educational efforts of all engineering and science-based university programs.  Leading vibration research facilities such as the University of Cincinnati Structural Dynamics Research Laboratory, the Modal Analysis and Controls Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Michigan Tech’s Dynamic Systems Laboratory and Purdue’s Center for Systems Integrity all have benefited with shakers from The Modal Shop.

The Modal Shop’s 2000 series electro-dynamic exciter family includes portable permanent magnet shakers rated from 100 lbf (440 N) down to 4 lbf (18 N).  Available designs include the revolutionary new SmartShaker™ with integrated power amplifier, a variety of mini, modal, dual purpose platform and accelerometer calibration shakers, and the new SmartAmp™ power amplifier.  A selection guide provides a simple graphical representation of shaker systems paired with appropriate power amplifiers, indicating the corresponding system force ratings.  Kit model numbers simplify the selection and ordering process, ensuring that all the necessary components and accessories are included.

The SmartShaker™ is a revolutionary innovation in electro-dynamic excitation.  The small footprint exciters eliminate the bulk, weight and aggravation of the traditional companion 19 inch rack-mount power amplifiers by integrating solid state power amplifier electronics inside the shaker package.  This Integrated Power Amplifier design concept follows the PCB Piezotronics® tradition of simplifying the test and measurement process by integrating the needed electronics, much like the original ICP® accelerometers miniaturized and moved the “charge amplifier” to inside the sensor package.  The small overall size (3.6 x 3.5 x 5.3 in (9.1 x 8.9 x 13.5 cm)), weighing just 7 lbs, make it a new class of portable solution ideal for university test laboratories and general purpose benchtop vibration studies.

The modal shaker systems range from 13 lbf to 100 lbf rating.  Each modal shaker features a through-hole armature with a chuck and collet stinger connection for easy setup and attachment to the test structure.  With all the shakers weighing under 33 lbs, they provide excellent force to mass ratio with nearly half the weight and twice the force as other common modal shakers.  These highly portable, rugged and easy to setup shakers are ideal for structural testing and experimental modal analysis applications, ranging from small electrical components to powertrain assemblies to large aircraft.

The innovative dual-purpose platform shaker systems integrate a through-hole armature design ideal for adapting stingers for modal applications into a traditional load-bearing platform shaker for vibration control applications.  By supporting both of these test methodologies the dual-purpose shaker designs from The Modal Shop prove to be the industry’s most versatile. These systems range from 40 lbf to 110 lbf rating, supporting static loads from 7 lb to 10 lb.

All of the shaker systems are backed by the PCB Group Total Customer Satisfaction Guarantee.  Visit the shaker family web page ( for complete specifications and data sheets on the entire line of vibration excitation products.  For additional information on these or other services, contact THE MODAL SHOP, INC., 3149 E.
