The Modal Shop Team is looking forward to attending the SIM Metrologica meeting hosted by NIST in just a few weeks. Highly technical presentations from National Metrology Institute members from around the globe coupled with lab tours make events like this an excellent opportunity to stay engaged with our worldwide community of metrologists. Are you participating in any technical events this year? We encourage you to find opportunities to leave the lab and meet with other like-minded professionals!
The Instrumentation Cable: Critical but Often Neglected

Compared to other high performace measurement system components, the selection of interconnecting cables is often neglected. Their functionality is frequently considered similar to fluid flow in a pipe where everything that enters exits successfully. Nothing could be further from the truth! Cables are extremely important and can be one of the largest sources of problems in instrumentation systems. Don't have your hands tied by a poor cable selection...

Tip of the Month

Calibrating Reference Accelerometers: Since double-ended reference accelerometers are designed to calibrate accelerometers in a "piggyback" back-to-back configuration, they are not well-suited to being calibrated themselves in the same fashion. Flipping the reference accelerometer and mounting it on a second double-ended reference accelerometer does not produce accurate results. Instead, these types of reference accelerometers should be calibrated using a single-ended transfer standard, or directly against a laser primary.

Blast from the Past:
Proficiency Deficiency in ISO 17025

You do it. I do it. Everyone does it. What is "it?" We make mistakes. In the technical and business world, quality systems have a regularly administered audit component to provide a means for testing and finding these "opportunities for improvement." How do you avoid major deficiencies or address them when they arise within your own accelerometer or microphone calibration program? To start off the discussion, let's look at the number 10 deficiency: Infractions in
ISO 17025 Section 5.9, Assuring the Quality of Test and Calibration Results...
