Did you know that May 20th is World Metrology Day? An annual commemoration of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by seventeen nations, World Metrology Day celebrates the creation of a global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial, and societal aspects. Our team in Cincinnati intends to honor the technical community we serve in May - though we'll have to make sure to have our ice cream scoops calibrated first!
Directivity Patterns in Acoustic Testing

Have you ever wondered what an acoustic directivity test looks like? Dr. Andrew Barnard demonstrates how directivity patterns and theory are used for noise source location, beamforming, holography, and sound power mapping. Check out a short video to see the setup and execution of a test.

Tip of the Month

Know your sensor vendor's phone number... and the names of their experts.  Contrary to what marketing departments would like us to believe, it's not all on the internet. Call your vendor when you need to know details like:
  • Are there any mounting fixtures used at the factory when calibrating my triaxial accelerometer?
  • What is your policy on returns for sensitivity drift?
  • Can I expect the same uncertainties as the sales specification sheet when operating my calibration system?
Blast from the Past: What Units Does an Accelerometer Calibration Value Have in the Digital World?

If you've used analog accelerometers before, then mV/g or mV/(m/s 2) are familiar units for sensitivity. But what if the sensor itself is digital? The oncoming wave of digital accelerometers will have the digitization built right inside the sensor. This means that rather than outputting an analog signal proportional to acceleration, the sensor outputs digital samples of the acceleration sensing element's analog output. Before the signal reaches any external equipment, the measurement is...
