Issue 124
If you're in a Daylight Savings Time area, we hope that your internal body clocks have recalibrated. Quite a few of our team members enjoy hiking, riding horses, and kayaking in their spare time - so they always look forward to the "extra" hour of daylight at this time of year. We hope it also gives you "extra" time to enjoy your outdoor hobbies as well!
Cause of and Solution for Cable Generated Noise
By Patrick Walter

It is well known that the triboelectric effect in cables can  cause errors in the signal for piezoelectric sensors operating in charge mode. Triboelectric effec t can also be a source of noise in piezoresistive (MEMS) accelerometers involved in pyroshock testing. This paper discusses the triboelectric effect, ways for the end user to mitigate that effect, and design improvements...

Tech Tip

Would you be interested in attending an upcoming modal analysis seminar? The Modal Shop and PCB's longtime educational partner Dr. Pete Avitabile, Professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering at University of Massachusetts Lowell, is a leading authority in the field and will serve as the instructor for the upcoming Structural Dynamic Measurements Seminar series. During the seminar, Dr. Avitabile will focus on the practical aspects of impact and shaker measurements. As a group, you'll discuss taking measurements - along with the pitfalls, difficulties, and common misconceptions related to testing. Join us!

Calibration and Resonance Q & A

Resonant Frequency Plot
Q: I see that the frequency response of the reference standard accelerometer is calibrated up to a 20 kHz upper limit frequency. So, how does the resonance search function (up to 50 kHz) for the calibration system "calibrate" the sensitivity at frequencies higher than 20 kHz?...
