Welcome to this month's edition of the Dynamic Sensors & Calibration Tips Newsletter. 

This month, we'll present an overview of a popular accelerometer design, the integral triaxial accelerometer. The popularity of this design is rooted in its cabling advantages and its geometry. However, taking advantage of this design requires a little bit of understanding about the mounting technique, so we'll review that also.
Triaxial Accelerometer Review

A popular form factor for piezoelectric accelerometers is the integral triaxial accelerometer. These are actually 3 distinct accelerometers mounted in the orthogonal X, Y, and Z directions. Integrated packaging brings all 3 accelerometers into a single cube with a single cable harness and overall 3-to-1 reduction in cabling. While on the surface this may seem trivial, it is a very practical advantage to anyone performing...

Tip of the Month

As simple as it may sound, always remember to turn the floating clamp on an accelerometer cable connector, rather than turning the sensor to screw on the cable. While it might feel more comfortable spinning the larger sensor and holding the fixed cable end, this causes the sensor connector to rotate about the cable signal pin, which can shear off fragments of the signal pin, risking a short circuit to the connector ground.

Blast from the Past:
Lowering the Barriers to Primary Calibration of Accelerometers

While the ever-lowering of uncertainty is the quixotic quest of the metrology industry, for certain laboratories the lowest possible uncertainty is a must. Of particular note are National Metrological Laboratories, Primary Standards Laboratories (often serving branches of the Armed Services or National Labs), Accelerometer Manufacturers (there are over 150 now) and Accelerometer Calibration System Manufacturers (where there are still only just a few...).
