It's summer in the Northern Hemisphere. With thoughts of the beach and all things water-related as a regular topic of conversation, what better time to learn more about underwater sensing technology? Earlier this month, "Sensor Design Parameters for Underwater Applications" was part of the Undersea Defense Technology Conference in Oslo, Norway. Sensor Design Parameters for Underwater Applications

Noise source detection and identification methods are used to determine the acoustic stealth of underwater vessels. All of the vessel's noise sources must be measured and identified, including on-board equipment, water flow across the hull or fins, cavitation of the propulsion system, personnel movement, and other sources of radiated noise. Sensors designed for applications of interior and exterior noise identification, noise and vibration monitoring, noise level assessments, and acoustic pressure sensor arrays all require some degree of protection for their intended use near or under water...
